Vada Pav | Mumbai Famous Street Food is a delicious snack item.

Vada Pav | Mumbai Famous Street Food is a fast food snack recipe. This dish is also known as ‘Bombay Burger in keeping its origin and similarity to the burger. The spicy potato ball is dipped into the gram flour batter then deep-fried. The fried vada is served with a pav or ladi pav (one type of bread), green chilli and different types of chutneys. It is a very famous street food of Mumbai, Maharashtra and everyone loves to eat it. This is a very easy and simple dish to make. So, try it out and enjoy with your loved ones.

This delicious dish is made by A 68-years-old Grandmom – Sarojini B Naidu from Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Ingredients

  • FOR POTATO MASALA:-
  • Potato - 4 big sized boiled and mashed
  • Green chilli - 2 chopped
  • Ginger - 1 inch piece grated
  • Garlic - 2 to 3 cloves grated
  • Salt - as per taste
  • Coriander leaves - a handful chopped
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Curry leaves - few
  • Oil - 1 Tablespoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 Teaspoon
  • FOR BATTER:-
  • Gram flour/Besan - 2 Cup
  • Salt - as per taste
  • Heeng/Asafoetida - a pinch
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 Teaspoon
  • Water - as required
  • Oil - for frying
  • FOR SERVING:-
  • Pav - 1 per serving
  • Green chilli - 4 slit
  • Green chutney - as required

Instructions

  1. PREPARING THE POTATO MASALA:-Take a kadai, add oil and heat it.
  2. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Let them splutter.
  3. Then add grated ginger, ginger garlic and curry leaves. Saute it on a low flame.
  4. Add green chilli and saute. Then add turmeric powder. Mix well. Then add chopped coriander leaves and mix well.
  5. Add boiled mashed potato. Mix well. Cook for a minute while stirring it. Then switch off the gas.
  6. Transfer to a plate and let it cool.
  7. PREPARING BATTER:-Take a bowl, add besan/gram flour, salt, heeng/asafoetida, turmeric powder. Mix well and water to make semi thick batter. Keep aside.
  8. PREPARING VADA PAV:-Heat oil in a kadai for frying.
  9. Take a small ball of the potato masala. Roll to make a smooth ball.
  10. Dip this ball in the besan batter. Coat it nicely.
  11. When the oil is hot, fry the vada on a low flame. Fry the vada until it turns light brown in colour from all the sides. Keep stirring in between.
  12. Once done, take it out on a tissue paper to soak extra oil.
  13. Fry the slit green chillies in the hot oil.
  14. PLATING:-Take a pav, cut into half.
  15. Put the vada in between with fried green chilli.
  16. Yummy 'Vada Pav' is ready to be served with green chutney.
