Ingredients

Dhuli urad dal - 1 cup ( soaked for 1 hour )
Chana dal - 1/4 cup ( soaked for 1 hour )
Water - 4-5 cups
Chopped onion - 1 medium
Chopped tomato - 2 medium
Chopped ginger, garlic and green chilli - 2 teaspoons each
Salt, pepper, red chilli powder, garam masala powder - tastewise
Oil - 2 tablespoons
INGREDIENTS FOR TADKA - Ghee - 2 tablespoons
Whole red chilli - 4-5
Cumin seeds, coriander seeds, mustard seeds and asafoetida powder - 1 teaspoon each
Red chilli powder - 2 teaspoons
Chopped coriander for garnishing
A shallow fry pan

Instructions

Heat the oil and add chopped onion, ginger, garlic and green chilies.
Saute for 2 minutes and add chopped tomatoes.
Cook for 2 minutes and add salt and all the powdered spices.
Add soaked dals and stir. Add water and let it boil.
Simmer the gas and cover the lid. Dont stir too much as it will make dals mushy.
When little water is left, switch off the gas. Keep it at rest for 5 minutes. Dal will soak extra moisture.
Make tadka. Heat ghee and add all the whole spices mentioned.
Add red chilli powder and pour tadka over dal.
Garnish it with chopped coriander and delicious Amritsari dal tadka is ready to be served with paratha or poori.
