How To Plan A Menu For Overnight Guests?

We all have that guests who stay overnight and we have to rush to make several dishes at a time .  Planning your menu beforehand can save your time. We, at Zayka ka Tadka are going to help to plan your menu for overnight guests.

Athithi Devo Bhava– ‘ The guest is equivalent to God’, is a part of the code of conduct for our Indian society. We share a dynamic host-guest relationship. We should make our guests comfortable by making them feel like home.

When it comes to planning a menu, the menu should be simple  and the food should be balanced, healthy and delicious. We should also take care of the guests’ ages and check if they have any dietary restrictions.


Breakfast–a very important and the first meal of the day. Create an attractive platter of fruits, yogurt and juices. Also keep milk, bread, biscuits, cereal, coffee and tea handy , so that everyone can enjoy the breakfast.

You can go for Fresh Orange juice  or chikoo shake is also a good option for a healthy and filling breakfast. Make besan bread toast in breakfast if you have kids along with your guests. It is healthy, instant and yummy.

Morning Snack

Healthy Chaats and salads must rule your morning snack platter. Boiled chana chaat is personally my  favorite morning snack. Rainbow salad is an attractive mix of veggies which is not only healthy but also appeal to the kids because of the beautiful colors present in it. Sprout Salad is also a very good option for morning snack. It is healthy, full of proteins and generally liked by all age groups. Lemony sprouts chaat  and kulia fruit chaat are the other easy  and healthy options you can opt for.


Lunches and dinners are the important meals of the day.  A simple menu include- rice, chapati, lentil, vegetable dish, chutney and curd/yogurt. A meal can be finished with simple dessert that you can prepare beforehand. You can also serve a simple salad- sliced tomatoes and cucumber sprinkle with salt, black pepper, and lemon juice. Vegetable dishes may include corn palak gravy, Lauki Kofte, Mixed Vegetable stir fry, Aloo gobhi , soya granules bhurji or tofu corn makhana gravy. Rajma curry, Chana dal palak curry, Amritsari dal tadka, Dal Makhani are some of the lentils recipes that you can choose from your lunch or dinner. You can go for plain chapati or kulcha or crispy tandoori naan. Though jeera rice go with any combination of the vegetable and lentils, you can also try Veg fried rice or Vegetable biryani.

Evening Snack

Onion Pakoras served with Masala Chai is an ideal snack for those who are fond of fried snacks.  Veg Vermiceilli or creamy sandwiches comes to rescue when you have guests who prefer healthy snacks. If you are interested in baking, try this simple chocolate cake or oats butter cookies, to be enjoyed with evening tea.

If you have kids along with your guests, keep some milk packets handy as many kids are used to drink milk either before going to bed or early in the morning.

This coffee cappuccino comes to rescue when you have some serious coffee lovers in the group who cannot stay late at night without strong coffee.

Winter has almost arrived. North India witness low temperatures during winter while the south enjoys a pleasant climate. Some cities in India are simply better in these months. So,  if you are looking for planning a family trip,  solo holiday or going out with friends,  go through the list of destinations to visit this winter.
Here are my picks for some of the best places to travel in winter:


December is one of the most vacation friendly month in India. With the number of festivals and events, Goa is a destination that you should not miss this December. Goa is the most famous and loved beach winter destination of India. Plan your trip to Goa from 25th December to 1st January. Goa has exactly everything to offer from Christmas to New Year. It is the perfect time to relax on beaches as the weather this time is pleasant here.


If you are a person who loves viewing scenic beauty,  then this place should be on your top list while visiting during winters. Though Nainital is not so crowded in winters as it is during summer, but you will find many tourists this season too. Winters are the best time to visit this hill station to view snowfall. Nainital is blessed with immense scenic beauty due to number of lakes present there. So,  head over to Nainital to experience snow, chilling weather and picturesque scenery. It will never disappoint you.


Dehradun, a beautiful city and capital of Indian state Uttarakhand has lot of things to offer in winter. Days are generally sunny with an unexpected rain anytime and cold nights marked with awesome climate. There are many spots to visit in Dehradun.  Dehradun is known for its heritage,  mountains, and lush greenery. Zoological park,  waterfalls and shrines –  Dehradun has it all. Mahadev Temple, Sahastradhara, Malsi Deer park, Fun Valley, Daat Kali Temple are the few places to visit in or near Dehradun.  The beautiful hill station Mussorrie is just 30 kms away from Dehradun.


Rajasthan is too hot in summers,  so winter is the best time to visit the places in Rajasthan. Jaipur,  a beautiful city of Rajasthan attracts lot of tourists from India and abroad.  Early mornings and evenings in winter are dominated by fog. Visit this wonderful place during these months and be all set to have a lovely vacation beating the heat. The pleasant weather ensures that you visit the Royal Pink City with complete delight. Hawa Mahal, Amber Fort,  Nahargarh Fort, Jal Mahal are the few historical places to visit in Jaipur. Chokhi Dhani located around 20 km from Jaipur,  recreates the ambience of a Rajasthani village. It is an open-air restaurant offers a rural Rajasthani experience complete with entertainment, snacks, camel rides and a proper sit-down Rajasthani meal which is served by enthusiastic servers.


One of the most beautiful states of India,  Kerala, also known as God’s own country, attracts lots of tourists in winter season. The temperature is low during in winters but the weather is never too chilly. Located on the sea side,  Kerala is a sight to behold. There are plenty of wonderful places to visit in Kerala. Kovalam,  Munnar, Poovar are some of the places that one must visit on a trip to Kerala. From coconut palm-lined coasts to rolling hills of tea to diverse wildlife to backwaters, holidays in Kerala make the perfect vacation.

5 Nutritious Baby First Food Recipes

Baby first food is an important meal when you are starting an extra feed for your baby, apart from milk. These baby first food recipes will give you ideas to start with.
Being a MOM is a feeling that is above the all other emotions in the world. Holding the child first time in your hands, you forget all your worries and your world starts to revolve around your child. It is very important to breastfeed your baby for the first 6 months, but it is equally important what baby first food recipes you are giving to your baby after first 6 months. Let’s discuss about the five nutritious baby first foods you can introduce to your baby.
The baby first foods must be easy to digest and should not cause any allergic reaction. Never add salt or sugar to your baby’s food till he/ she turns 1 year old. Salt may harm your baby’s kidneys and sugar will encourage a sweet tooth. The baby first food should be full of nutrition. It should be full of vitamins,  minerals, fats and other nutrients that the growing body of your baby needs.

Bananas for baby first food

Bananas are great for baby first food!  Bananas are sweet, which may help baby more readily accept the first food experience. They are considered as complete food. They are rich in Vitamins, iron and minerals.
For making Banana bowl for your baby
  • Peel a ripe banana.
  • Place banana in a food processor or blender and puree.
  • You can also mash the banana in a bowl using a regular fork.

Apple puree for baby first food

After bananas, fruit purees are next in baby first foods that help in new taste sensations. Naturally sweet, apple puree is easy to make and healthy for your baby. Apples are rich in Vitamins: A, C, Folate and Minerals: Potassium, Magnesium, Calcium.
For making Apple puree for your baby,
  • Peel, core and cut apple into slices or small pieces.
  • In a saucepan, bring apples and water to the boil.
  • Simmer for 10 minutes or until the apples are very soft.
  • Remove from the heat and allow to cool for a few minutes.
  • Puree using  a ladle or blender until smooth and pass through a sieve to remove lumps, if any.

Rice water as baby first food

Rice water is the starch that forms on boiling rice. Most mothers prefer feeding the baby rice water before introducing mashed rice in their diet. Rice water contains high levels of carbohydrates that help fulfill your baby’s energy requirement. Also, rice water is easily digestible.
Ingredients required :
  • Two tablespoons of rice
  • 1 cup of water
 Steps to follow-
  • Place rice in a saucepan and add water to it.
  • Boil until the rice is tender.
  • Strain the rice and collect the water. Your rice water is ready.

Lentil soup as baby first food

Yellow Moong Daal is one lentil which is easily digestible and is a good source of proteins and minerals. Make sure that you are mashing cooked daal with daal ka paani (water in which dal is cooked) as only lentil water is a poor source of nutrition. Cooked daal has most of the nutrition and that should be fed to the baby.
Ingredients required :
  • 2 tbsps cup yellow moong daal
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Turmeric powder (a pinch)
Steps to follow-
  • Wash daal in drinking water for 4-5 times, and soak the daal for about 30 minutes.
  • Take a pressure cooker and add the soaked daal and half a cup of water.
  • Add to this a pinch of turmeric powder.
  • Cook the daal for 4-5 whistles.
  • Let the pressure get released on its own.
  • When you open the cooker, use a flat spoon or a ladle to mash the daal and sieve it to avoid any lumps.

Ragi porridge – super food baby first food

Ragi is a super food. In terms of nutrition, it is a great substitute to the costly quinoa that is becoming popular! Ragi is a healthy food for babies, rich in calcium & Iron. It is rich in dietary fiber which helps in healthy weight gain. It has proteins and minerals and is easily digestible by babies. This ragi porridge is ideal when you introduce ragi for the first time to baby, as it’s prepared directly from whole ragi seeds by soaking and extracting milk, which is husk free. The consistency of this porridge is similar to the store bought baby first foods like instant cereal powder but it is much better in terms of nutrition! Ragi porridge can also be prepared from Ragi powder, and in this case sprouted organic Ragi flour is better than the regular variety.
Ingredients required :
  • Ragi seeds – 1 cup
  • Water – to grind
Steps to follow-
  • Take ragi in a pan and wash it by rubbing well with your hands. Repeat the process 2 to 3 times unless it is clean.
  • Soak the ragi in clean water for 8-10 hours. Keep it covered.  The colour of the ragi will be slightly changed after soaking.
  • Drain the water completely.
  • Transfer the  ragi to a blender.
  • Add ¼ cup of water to it and blend for 2 minutes.
  • Again add ¼ cup of water and grind it till smooth.
  • Extract the ragi milk by straining using a muslin cloth. Squeeze out the milk completely.
  • Discard the ragi and collect the milk in a pan.
  • Cook the ragi milk in a saucepan until it becomes thick and like a porridge consistency.
  • Switch off the flame once done.
  • Serve it warm.

During the summer break or a weekend off from work, who doesn’t like to visit the places which have lot to offer you in terms of food, entertainment and enjoyment?
In the month of June,  we had a week off from work,  so we decided to go for a 3 days 2 nights trip to Haridwar – Mussoorie. That trip was more awesome than expected.
What you need for a good trip is- good food and good people, and I had both of them!
Though the Haridwar’s platter was mostly affected by North​ Indian vegetarian food,  Mussoorie specializes in both Tibetan and Chinese cuisines. So,  I am here listing 5 must have foods on your trip to Haridwar – Mussoorie. I hope you will not miss any on you trip to Haridwar – Mussoorie.

Poori Aloo with Meethi Lassi

Whenever you visit Haridwar, indulge in Poori which is a deep fried Indian bread,  served along with Aloo Chickpea Curry ( two curries are prepared Aloo and Chickpea,  but while serving both are mixed in equal proportions)  and that is what makes it really good. The pooris are served garma – garam  on a big leaf and are crisp, the potato – chickpea curry is spicy and yummy and you get a nice big glass of creamy meethi lassi along them. This will keep you full for many hours.

Sweet Samosas

So,  if you are in Haridwar,  you should not miss two things– Evening Aarti at Har ki Paudi and Sweet Samosas. These Samosas have a filling of chopped dry fruits and coconut and are deep fried and dumped into sugar syrup.

Chilli Momos

Many restaurants in Mussoorie serves authentic Tibetan and Chinese food. All the dishes are delicious but chilli momos stand out. The steamy, soft momos with spicy gravy is something you must try. You will be committing a sin if you forget to try this heavenly food!

Maggi at Maggi points

Maggi Points are located on the Dehradun-Mussoorie Road. These road side hawker sheds serve hot and spicy Maggi noodles and other snacks. Stop by one of these sheds on your way to Mussoorie and enjoy the delicious noodles.

Garam Dhoodh

There is a very famous shop in Mussoorie which serves delicious sweets and garam dhoodh. I assure you guys that the “garam doodh” in kulhad is sheer divinity. Do ask for an extra dollop of malai / “cream”. Gajar/carrot halwa and dry fruit samosas are other must-try foods here.
The list doesn’t really end here.  Stopping by the mallside road for soups or fresh apple juice is yet another experience.
