Travelling with a baby can be hassle free with these simple baby food ideas. 

Parenthood teaches all of us to plan the travel well in advance. Travelling with a baby, even if it is just for a day of train travel or air travel, mothers have to keep all necessary things handy. When travelling with a baby of 6 – 12 months age, home cooked food is the most feasible option. Travelling with homemade baby food is not as difficult as we think. For a successful trip pre-planning and calculated arrangements are the key. It is not necessary to solely rely on available packaged food. Depending on where we are travelling, and the time of stay we can make necessary travel packing. The following are tips to manage baby food during travel.

 

Carry hot water flask/electric kettle and baby feeding utensils

It is always important to carry hot water flask/electric kettle while travelling in train. Babies till they turn 12 months are more dependent on milk. If your baby is on formula milk, then necessary formula, bottles and water need to be carried. Hot water is also necessary for sterilizing the baby bottles and utensils. Feeding utensils for baby are important to carry to avoid food contamination.

Fresh fruits

Fresh fruits are the most easy to carry baby food. We have to keep in mind that the fruit is almost ripe and not fully ripe to avoid wastage. Banana, chicoo/sapota, papaya and mango are the most preferred travel fruits. If going out for air travel for a short time span, stewed and cooled apple can also be carried.

Homemade baby porridge recipe – instant and quick!

Recipe:

  • Dry roast red rice poha, let it cool down.
  • Now add palm sugar and grind both of them into a powder.
  • Whenever need to feed the child simply add hot water or hot milk and mix well let it stand for a while.
  • Now add more water/milk and mix well.
  • Your instant porridge is ready to feed the child.

Boiled and cooled vegetables (potato, carrot)

While travelling on a train we can carry boiled unpeeled potato and mash it and add some spices like salt and pepper it and feed the baby, can also give cheese slice along with potato.(if cheese is introduced to baby). Boiled potato if not pealed stay edible for up to 5 hours easily. Boiled grated carrot and potato can be mashed together.

Snacks (homemade ladoos, mathri and thepla)

We can always carry homemade ladoos, mathri and thepla if the baby is introduced to these. Freshly cooked idlis and chutney can also be consumed during train travel (it can last up-to 3-4 hours)

 

Always carry extra water, sanitizer and utensil washing liquid while travelling in a train or on a road trip. Baby soothers, wipes and their favourite toys come in handy during feeding while travelling with the baby.

We often don’t give much attention to them and as a result, we end up with dry and cracked feet and heels. No doubt, they need extra care and certain foot care tips from time to time. We bring you a simple and easy 4 step guide to achieve smoother feet all naturally at home.

 

A homemade pedicure does the magic!

Soak your feet

Soaking your feet is the best the way to end a tired day. Just take a foot tub (any small tube or bucket would do), pour some lukewarm water and add some sea salt and few drops of your favorite essential oil: lavender oil for relaxing, peppermint or tea tree for dis-infecting or lemon for de-odorizing. You can also add 1-2 slices of lemon and few petals of rose or marigold. That will surely make you feel like a queen! Soak your feet in it for 10-15 mins and relax. You can also use this time to clean dirt and scrub sole. Also clean your toenails properly as they tend to hold dirt and sweat in them and may get germs and infections.

Tip: you can put smooth stones or marbles in the tub to get some massage.

Foot Scrub

Next is the time to scrub. Make this simple scrub:

Sugar – 1 tablespoon

Honey – 1 tablespoon

Peppermint oil – 5 drops.

Mix all the ingredients to form a thick paste. Apply this paste on wet feet and scrub gently. You can add 1 teaspoon of coconut oil to the mix to get a dose of moisture. You can also use any of the scrubs given here: “6 Homemade Body Scrubs For All Skin Types”. This also softens cracked heels.

Moisturize

Here is a simple recipe for daily foot lotion.

Milk – 250ml

Peppermint leaves – handful

Rosemary (fresh) – 2 tablespoon

Peppermint oil – 3 drops

Bring the milk to boil. Add peppermint leaves and rosemary and let the milk steep for 15 mins. Cool and strain. Now add 3 drops of peppermint oil to this milk. Store it in airtight bottle. Apply daily morning and evening. This lotion is good about 4 weeks if kept in refrigerator. You can also use any of the body butters given here: “4 Homemade Body Butters For A Deep Nourishment

Foot balm

For extra dose of nourishment, make this simple foot balm:

Shea butter – 2 tablespoon

Coconut oil – 2 tablespoon

Beeswax – 1 tablespoon

Essential oil (of your choice) – 15 drops

Melt shea butter and beeswax in double boiler. Add coconut oil and let it cool. Once cool, add essential oil and put it in fridge to set. Shea butter provides deep moisturizing and coconut oil gives required nourishment. Beeswax is primarily added to give it the balm texture and it also has moisturizing properties. This is my current foot balm. It works better than any store brought foot cream for me. Apply this balm on your feet every day before hitting the bed to get rid of cracked and dry heels and to wake up to a softer feet.

So, skip those harmful products and turn to natural hair conditioners for your locks. Here are some easy and quick recipes for homemade natural hair conditioners and masks to make your hairs smooth and silky.

 

Jojoba and Shea butter mask for dry and frizzy hair

  • Jojoba oil – ¼ cup
  • Shea butter – ¼ cup
  • Ylang-ylang oil
  • lemon oil – 15 drops

Melt shea butter in double boiler and add jojoba oil in it. Add total of 15 drops of essential oil in the mixture. Apply from mid length to tips and leave for 30 mins. Clean it with mild shampoo. This mask works well for frizzy hairs. Shea butter provides moisture to dry hair and jojoba oil gives necessary nourishment to lifeless hair. You can also use tea tree oil or sage oil for hair. Use it once a week and see the difference. This one is my current favorite. Simple to make, easy to use natural hair conditioning mask that works amazing for frizzy hairs.

 

Avocado and coconut oil mask for weak hair

  • Avocado (ripen) – ½
  • Coconut oil – 1 tablespoon
  • Rosemary oil – 10 drops

Mash the ripen avocado and add coconut oil in it. Add essential oil. Apply this mixture on your hairs from top to bottom, till the ends. If you have very dry scalp, you can use it on scalp also. Leave it for 15-20 mins. Cover with a shower cap to avoid dripping. Wash it off with a mild shampoo. Avocado and coconut oil give deep nourishing to weak hair and make them strong. Coconut oil also helps in preventing early grey hair.

 

Banana, olive oil and honey mask for damaged hair

  • Banana (ripen) – 1
  • Olive oil – 2 tablespoon
  • Honey – 2 tablespoon

Mash the banana. Add olive oil and honey and mix well. Apply on your hairs and leave it for 20 mins. Wash it with shampoo. Banana prevents shrinkage of hairs, honey add shine to your hairs and olive oil provides the required nourishment to the damaged hairs. If your hair is damaged from any chemical treatment, this is the best mask for you.

 

Apple cider vinegar and lavender natural hair conditioner for lusterless and dull hair

  • Apple cider vinegar – ½ cup
  • Water – 2 cups
  • Lavender oil – 10 drops

Mix all the ingredients. Put the rinse solution in a sprinkler and spray it on the scalp and hairs. Leave it for 30 mins and rinse it with water. Do not shampoo after it. You can also leave it on the hairs (if not applied on scalp).

 

Green tea and mint natural hair conditioner for dry hair

  • Green tea – 1 cup
  • Mint leaves – handful
  • Water – 2 cups

Bring 2 cups of water to boil and add mint leaves to it. Let it boil till the water reduces to half. Let it cool. Mix it with 1 cup of green tea. Rinse your hairs with it after shampoo for fresh hairs and scalp. Green tea provides smooth texture to the hairs with mint provides preventing scalp infections and other problems caused in hot summer and helps in cooling.

Use these easy and effective natural hair conditioner recipes and get the hair of your dreams without spending a lot on those harmful products. You’ll surely love your hair.

 

Note:

A hair mask needs to be washed with shampoo after use where as a conditioner is used on clean hair after shampoo and depending on the type can be a leave-in or rinse off.  Always use a natural and mild shampoo for your hair. You can add a few drops of essential oil according to your need like, cedar or bergamot oil for oily hairs, lavender oil for dull hairs, lemon oil and ylang-ylang oil for normal hairs. You can also add tea tree oil or peppermint oil for their anti-bacterial and cooling properties respectively. Protect your hair from harsh sunlight. Either use leave-in sunscreen conditioner or cover them properly when stepping in scorching sun for long time.

  • Cucumbers: Cucumber works great for dark circles. It has cooling effects which soothes eyes and also lighten dark circles. Simply cut two slices of cucumber and place them onto your eyelid. Let them sit there for 15-20 mins. You’ll see results with regular use.
  • Almond oil and rose: Rose has some amazing properties which are good for skin. Mix 50 ml almond oil with 5-7 drops of rose oil. Apply a drop or two of this mixture around the eye region. It will give the necessary nourishment to the eye skin and help fight dark circles too.
  • Tea bag: Keep the used tea bags in fridge. Take out the cooled tea bags and keep it on your eyes for 10-15 mins. Preferably use green tea. Its rich in both caffeine and anti-oxidants which are good for skin. This remedy is also helpful in puffy eyes. So, next time, don’t throw away that used tea bag. It still has a lot to offer.
  • Rose water: As said earlier, rose is very good for skin. An alternate method of using it is rose water. Just put few drops of rose water on a cotton pad and leave them on eyes for 15 min. It cools down your eyes and prevents dark circles. A quick trick here: take a jar and put lot of cotton pads in it. Now pour rose water it till all the pads are soaked in it. Remove extra rose water and cover the jar. Place this jar in fridge. You have cool rose water ready for eyes. You can also carry this jar in your bag when travelling as it’s a very good remedy for tired eyes.

 

Eye care tips for puffy eyes

  • Potatoes: Slice the potato and place the slices on your eyes. Leave it for 10-15 mins. This will help in puffy eyes.
  • Spoon: Place two spoons in freezer. Take them out when completely chill. Place them on your puffy eyes and see its magic.
  • Chilled milk pads: Dip a few cotton pads in raw milk and put them in fridge. Take out the completely chilled milk pads and place them on your eyes for 10-15 mins. It will surely help.
  • Tea bags: As said above, just place the cold tea bags on your puffy eyes for 15 mins and relax. This will make you feel better.

 

Basic tips for eye care:

  • Eat right: Healthy food shows its refection in healthy eyes. Eat lots of leafy vegetables, carrots, tomatoes and cucumbers. They are very good for your eye.
  • Stay hydrated: Drinking water regularly keeps skin moisturized and healthy looking.
  • Remove make-up: Always remove make-up before hitting the bed. Always use a plant based or natural make-up remover and never rub your eye area to remove make-up. Put some make-up remover on a cotton ball and dab it gently and massage softly. Wash it off with cool water. You can also use baby oil or coconut oil for make-up removing.
  • Massage and moisturize: Keep your eyes moisturized by massaging with avocado oil, almond oil, olive oil or jojoba oil. These natural plant oils are excellent way to moisturize eye and keep skin smooth. Be careful not to get the oil in your eyes.
  • Use shades: Always use sun glasses when stepping out in sun.

 

Quick tips for eye lash care:

  • Use mascara with almond oil to strengthen your eyelashes.
  • Carefully apply olive oil or castor oil on your lashes using a cotton swap for some deep nourishing. You can mix 1 drop of pure good quality vitamin-E oil.
  • Be careful while removing make-up. Gently clean your lashes with a soft cloth moistened with cold water or make-up remover. Don’t rub harshly you might break your lashes. Rub softly towards your nose to wipe-off mascara.

Which is the best cooking oil? Is it cold pressed oil, organic oil or refined oil? Oil is a versatile ingredient and it is time to make a right choice in choosing the best cooking oil.
Ever wondered what is a cold pressed oil?  Here is why you should choose an organic cold pressed oil over commercial refined oil.

Well, I am sure you would have guessed the answer by now. Cuisine, especially in Indian cooking is almost hard to imagine without this wonder ingredient – oil.

I would consider oil as the secret fat that is almost impossible to do without. The calorie count can be a huge saving grace if you eat home cooked meals on most days. When oil is something unavoidable in daily cooking, we might as well have it in its best form and hence the search for best cooking oil.

There was a time when I was on a very conscious and wholesome, only-nutritious diet to loose weight. As part of many other changes in my diet and exercise, my dietitian asked me to cut down on oil consumption. She asked me not to have it more than two spoonfuls a day. Now it depends on my creativity whether I try to make vada (I know it is impossible with 2 spoons!) or stir fry veggies or just drizzle on my salad. Wow I had the freedom to choose what can be done with two spoonfuls!
When you feel you need to cut down on fats, you might as well have that meager quantity in the most rightful way. In spite of the fat content associated with all oils, there is no denying the fact that they are a kitchen’s best friend. So how do we make the best use of it? The best form of an oil is when it is an organic cold pressed oil. Now the real question pops up – why? Well, stay with me for the rest of the post to know the best cooking oil.

What is organic cold pressed oil?

Let us divide the term ‘organic cold pressed oil’ into organic + cold pressed oil. The base ingredient, whether it is a seed or a nut which is used for oil extraction here is organically grown one. As per wiki, while there are many processes for extracting oil, the cold pressed method neither uses chemicals nor extreme heat in the process. This will make sure that the oil retains all its nutrients and essential qualities and will not end up as a mere fat.

Why should one consume organic cold pressed oil?

Here are some more reasons to go for organic cold pressed oil and why it is the best cooking oil.

Being organic

As with any other organic food, there is no use of fertilizers in growing the base ingredient of oil, be it sunflower seeds, groundnuts etc.

Concentration

Oil is a concentrated form of the base ingredient and hence it is better to avoid regular refined oils. This is because, whatever the remains of chemicals in oil – either from base ingredient or from the process of refining – might be present in concentrated form too.

Nutritious

As the process is a cold pressed one, there is no refining done and the oil has all its nutrients intact, making it pure, much tastier and flavourful.

Prompts you to eat healthy

We all know that deep fried food consumes more oil and hence it is not recommended as a daily diet. The smoking point of most cold pressed oils is less, which means that a cold pressed oil can get heated in a lesser time than a regular refined oil. For this reason, often cold pressed oils are used for all other kinds of cooking and not much for deep frying, as deep frying requires you to cook at high heat. Once you develop the habit of eating organic cold pressed oils, it will also indirectly prompt you to reduce the habit of eating too much deep fried food – blessing in disguise, isn’t it?

How to consume organic cold pressed oil?

It is best to use organic cold pressed oil for low heat cooking or to top it on your salads. Otherwise, it can be used in regular cooking that you do. Safflower cold pressed oil is usually recommended in case you want to use some oil for high heat cooking.

How about shelf life?

As regular refined oils get treated at high temperatures, naturally they will have more shelf life when compared to cold pressed oils. But what is the use in storing and consuming something unhealthy for such long periods in the first place? It is the same case with other organic staples – the chances of organic staples catching bugs happens more often than non-organic staples. As they say, even the bugs would refuse to eat certain foods (read presence of chemicals), but many of us consider the same to be edible and fit for eating for all the wrong reasons. If you are concerned about the shelf life of your organic foods and even cold pressed oil, I would suggest you to buy them in lesser quantities and more frequently to serve the purpose, rather than consuming chemically treated food.

Other uses of edible organic cold pressed oil

Organic cold pressed oil can also be used in certain ways, other than cooking. Personally, I use organic cold pressed coconut oil as a moisturizer during winter. A drop of organic cold pressed castor oil mixed with few drops of water works effectively on extreme dry skin. Organic cold pressed sesame oil is rich in vitamin E and works effectively on your hair and scalp. For these reasons often these oils are mentioned as the ingredients in the preparation of cosmetics.

Best cooking oil – some favorites!

Somehow organic cold pressed groundnut oil has struck a chord with me. I love the aroma and the flavor that it brings to my food. Unlike other refined oils, the cold pressed one looks much thicker and is translucent, proving it to be more purer. I also use organic cold pressed sunflower oil in my occasional baking. And when I want something light and with less flavor which blends well with any food, safflower oil is my best bet. What is your favorite organic cold pressed oil?
